Looking for something…

<start violins playing sad music>

Being an EMD has it’s own level of challenge on a day to day basis.  In our service, we don’t have GPS on the ambulances telling us their locations down to the minute.  The choice of who is closest to the call is left to the dispatcher to decide.

Our call volume is very large given the resources available in some areas so decisions of who will and who won’t get prompt paramedic care is left up to the dispatcher.  These are only a couple of the inherent challenges in our dispatch centre.  After six years, overcoming these obstacles is becoming less and less fulfilling.

We are having some staffing challenges over the last few years including an out-dated training program and lack of bodies.  I find myself attempting to mitigate potential damage done by a few of or lack of my coworkers.  It’s getting a bit tiresome.

I find myself wishing for a Mass Casualty Incident for some excitment.  It makes me feel dirty inside.  I need something new.  To keep from dying a little inside, I need something that will give me some sense of accomplishment.  Hopefully the new CAD system we are putting in place in June will create some projects I can help out with, but that is doubtful as they have assigned a lot of that type of work to others already.  Barring that, I may even find myself taking my paramedic skills and going back to the street if I can’t get my groove back in the centre.

I’m not sure where this will take me, but I’m sure I’ll post about it again.
